FEATURED GRADUATE
KATHY URSCHEL, LMT
RECENTLY INDUCTED INTO THE SYRACUSE SPORTS HALL OF FAME
KATHY URSCHEL HAS BEEN NAMED THE SECOND WINNER OF THE OSTM APPRECIATION AWARD.
On October 17, 2005, cyclist Kathy Urschel was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. Though a degenerative condition and accident left Kathy without sight and limited hearing she excelled in the massage program at the Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage. She was chosen by her peers to deliver the commencement address and was awarded the prestigious Director's Award. Kathy has been building a successful practice at a local fitness center. Kathy also holds a Master's Degree from Syracuse University.
She won a silver medal in the 1996 Olympic Paraplegic competition in cycling, and has completed the grueling 3,050 mile Race Across America. In 1990 she was named "A Woman of Distinction" by the NY State Senate, and in 1998 she received a letter of congratulations from President Bill Clinton.
In 2000, while Kathy was training for the Australia games, she crashed her bike while traveling 40 MPH. The accident left her partially paralyzed. While in recovery she received a phone call from Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim, who invited her to speak to the team after her recovery.
Kathy lists her mother and Wilma Rudolph as her inspirations.
"We have had a lot of different people graduate from this program (Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage). I always tell people it doesn't matter if you haven't been in school in 30 years, it doesn't matter if you have a learning disability or a physical disability, if you are determined to be successful at massage it will happen. Overcoming obstacles most of us can't imagine, Kathy Urschel is an inspiration to every student, instructor, and staff member at the Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage. Her dedication and self determination has been a model we all aspire too."
